I believe that in answering these questions, we not only add something to our understanding of what sovereignty is, but also to w~~t it is not-that is to say, we come nearer to knowing what forms of political life constitute an incompatible counterpoint to sovereignty. If it is possible to arrive at a viable politics beyond sovereignty, these forms of political life may help show the way. Answers to these questions promise not only to elucidate sovereignty by exposing what it fears most, but in doing so, should offer some indi~ation of what the "coming politics" must overcome if, as Agamben maintains, "the concepts of sovereignty and of constituent power, which are at the core of our political tradition, have to be abandoned or, at least, to be thought allover again" (HS, 112).
